We have hit the ground running learning new things in all subject areas and the students are working hard! I have been very proud of their commitment to learning and being open to new strategies. We learned a new way of writing whole numbers and decimals in expanded form this past week. Check out this website to learn more...

Egg Drop Projects

Our class tested our egg drop projects in Science yesterday. Each student had to create a container to hold a raw egg in and drop it from about an 8 foot drop and make sure the egg stayed intact. They were asked to demonstrate what they learned about forces and motion in science in their project. I was super impressed at the creativity I saw and how the students were able to show what they learned. They tested their projects and all projects were well thought out and planned....and we had fun, too!

MLK Day

Our class wrote a poem in honor of MLK day. We wanted to share:

I am Martin Luther King Jr

By: Mrs. Johnson’s 5th Grade Class

January 16, 2014

I am confident.

I am a risk taker.

I am committed to helping everyone be treated fairly.

I am disappointed about how African Americans are treated poorly.

I am Martin Luther King Jr.

I am concerned about my people being mistreated.

I am speaking for all African Americans.

I am a brave man.

I am ready for all African Americans to be treated with respect.

I am Martin Luther King Jr.

I am sticking up for what I believe in.

I am pleased that African Americans now have been given equal rights.

I am making a difference in the lives of all people.

I am a peace maker.

I am Martin Luther King Jr.

Winter Party

We had a blast at our winter party the Friday before we got out for winter break. A Big thank you to Michelle Reid, our room mother, and ALL the other parents who came out and helped make this time a fun time for all our students. The students had a great time in the snowman relay, a book exchange, and some yummy treats to eat. I wanted to share some pictures and here is a short video I put together too in case you wanted to see the fun!

Immigration Facebook pages

We researched different immigration groups throughout our Social Studies unit on Immigration. The students shared their research in a fun way! They created posters that looked like Face Book Pages for their immigrant. Here we are working on our projects. We have completed them and they are currently being displayed at the end of the fifth grade hallway. Come by and check them out if you get a chance! The students worked very hard on them and they turned out great! I am super proud of their work!

First in Math

Our class is team of the week this week in our school's program called First in Math. Our has has won team of the week several times this year because of the students commitment to using this program at home. I am very proud of our students who use this program. It helps them to excel in math because of the extra practice it provides. Encourage your child to keep working on this program at home. Here is a picture of us with the trophy! Way to go!
